Memphis Taproom Handmade Market

It’s lamely exciting to me when I can go into the image archive for an annual event, because it means the blog’s been tracking this sort of thing for over a year now. Began last summer, the Handmade Market at Memphis Taproom is still looking for venders for their festival of local and handmade art and crafts. Email leigh@memphistaproom.com if you’re interested in vending your wares. There’s no application fee and a limited number of spaces.

The market will take place Saturday, July 17 from 11 A.M.- 3 P.M. with a rain date of Sunday, July 1.

Memphis Taproom Second Anniversary Bash

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

It’s hard to believe but the Memphis Taproom is only in it’s second year. They came onto the scene strong, in an emerging neighborhood, with lots of fun events, and steady offering of tasty food and beers. They even showed art on the walls for a while (I heard a rumor that the arrival of an infant is what put a kibosh on that momentum. Babies. It’s what they do.) Anyway, they’ll be celebrating turning two tonight Thursday, April 22nd starting at 5 P.M. with complimentary treats, some special drafts including rare beers from Lost Abbey, De Dolle, Kasteel, Stone, Sierra Nevada, Allagash, Dogfish Head and more. How sweet! Free nosh with the beers to celebrate your patronage. FYI the kitchen and dining room will NOT be open for regular dining, so if you’re just there for the passed treats and beer, that’s a-ok.

Something to do : meet the brewer

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

Tonight Memphis Taproom is hosting a meet the brewer night with brewmaster Tomme Arthur of Port Brewing and Lost Abbey. From 6-8 P.M. tonight you can drink beer and chat with the man responsible for crafting it. On draft will be Mongo Double IPA, Older Viscosity, Hop 15, Wipeout IPA, Gift of the Magi (’08) and Carnivale, and the Taproom has also promised some super limited edition surprises. The email simply says that “everything will be priced to move” so I’m not sure the pricing on the beers, but apparently if you have a resemblance to Tomme Arthur (ie bald folks with glasses —ladies, gents, or otherwise identifying) get an additional $1 off Port Brewing and Lost Abbey drafts. Ah, Monday.

Celebrate Repeal Day

Friday, December 4th, 2009

Tomorrow, December 5th is Repeal Day! As in, the 76th Anniversary of when they repealed the Volstead Act, and 21st amendment was ratified, ending Prohibition, legalizing alcohol, and making the world a happier place. I was shocked how few events I was able to find around town, (I’m hoping foobooz will bust out a list soon and I can augment this sorry gathering) but here you go:

Bridgid’s will be in the midst of their very own beer week and will celebrating with a keg of Dogfish Head 120 minute. 726 N. 24th St.

Memphis Taproom will have all beer on draft for just one dollar but only from noon till 3 P.M. I suggest going for brunch early and then making the most of the three hour period. 2331 E. Cumberland St.

I found another one, but it’s at a terrible, terrible bar, and I refuse to even mention it. If you like terrible bars, you can google it yourself.

Top 10 Bars – according to AiB contributors

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

While having a nice late lunch Sunday with the partner at Varga Bar, we debated what made a good bar. Beer is a chief concern for him. He also puts a lot of stock into the quality of food. For myself, it has to do with comfort. The ability to spend hour upon hour¬† in the same bar. This requires the right balance of attention / being left alone by¬† servers,¬† appropriately dark, interest in what’s on tap, and affordability. If I’m spending hours leisurely drinking, I need to be able to pay and tip well. Anyway, I polled some of the other AiB contributors and needled the partner into giving his 2 cents. Check out our picks. (more…)

Things to do: Mystery Beer Weekend

Mystery Beer Weekend
Mystery Beer Weekend

There is always a lot of fun things to do on the weekends if you dig around a bit, or are in the know, or read artinbars. *wink*.¬† Something that I heard last year was super fun and wanted to do, but, as per usual, was working and could not attend, is Memphis Taproom’s Mystery Beer Weekend which is exactly what it sounds like. A full three days of Mystery! And 33 Beers! And solving said mystery of large amounts of beer.

Alright, the only mystery is determining what the beers are; no super stuff like the abv, or ibu, or guessing the hop varietals, or who killed Mr. Body. But what an excuse to put all those other times of beer drinking to the test! Drawing upon your deep seeded memories of beers past, and undoubtedly discovering new, henceforth unknown beers! Deducing what could possibly be categorized where! You have no idea how much I want to get my girl detective on.

More information is available on the Memphis Taproom website, and I suggest reading honorable mention Suzanne the Beer Lass’ first hand account of how it went down last year to give you an idea of what you’re in for.

I am, of course, warning you of Mystery Beer Weekend now, so you can save your sheckles, round up different groups of friends for each three days, and start scouring the internet for cheats.¬† I will be working First Friday (about to go do install, btw), working Saturday til evening, and um, eating a lot of crabs Sunday, so chance of my making it out is slim. Sigh. It’s like the goat races all over again.

Weekend Art Picks – Memphis Taproom Craft Fair

Memphis Taproom Handmade Market

Memphis Taproom Handmade Market

But you love Ladysmith Black Mambazo!

Now, I told you all about this way back when they were looking for crafters, and boy oh boy did you respond. Today there will be more than 50 crafters selling their wares¬† from 10am-3pm in the side yard at Memphis Taproom (Memphis and Cumberland Streets in Kensington.) Everyone is super local, and there are many many talented folks in the line up. A partial list of vendors is online at memphistaproom.com. So go, enjoy the day, support your local artists and craftspersons, and have lunch and a beer at Memphis afterward. If for some reason you’ve never made it up to the Memphis Taproom for their delicious pub fare and great beer selection, here’s a great excuse. Go!

P.S. Ladysmith Black Mambazo is playing at the Mann tonight, so, that explains the random Mean Girls Quote. Kinda. Not really so much, actually.

A New Month

Monday, June 1st, 2009

It is a lovely morning in our apartment. There is a soft breeze coming in through the doors and the noise of South Street hasn’t yet started. The exhaust fans are still silent on all the restaurant roofs and nary a duck boat has gone quacking by rehashing the same stale anecdotes. I am more than a little hungover from brunch at a friends house, followed by ASCB and then rooftop cocktails and pizza. But Mondays are my Sunday, so all’s well. All I have to do today are errands and chores.

Meanwhile, a new month means  an upcoming First Friday and tracking down new art listings:

Memphis Taproom (who is always so on top of their pr mailings — a business after my own heart) is showing the photography of Ed Snyder.

And from what I’ve been able to track down through the ol’ interwebs:
Green Line Cafe is showing Hernease Davis’ Clark Park Photographs.
Green Line on Locust has Ketch Wehr drawings–Anthropomorphisms, or “I Can’t Make You Love Me if you Don’t”
Green Line Powelton is still showing Anna Breininger.
Germ Books up on the Frankford Arts Ave is showing THE QUICKSAND FONTANELLE by Thomas Nöla & his New England Lapins
Cafe Estelle is showing A Square Deal – Opening Friday 6/5 but don’t have any more info or images up just yet. So I can’t tell if this is a group or solo show
Very late in the game I found out that the Bean Cafe is showing photographs by Tamsen Wojtanowski through June 9th. This is rad because Wojtanowski is going to be in the summer group show at the gallery I work at. See? AIB is an important stepping stone in establishing a showing / sales history.

All this and more can be found on this listings page. Now to e-mail the businesses that don’t have their info up yet.
