Art Star Craft Bazaar

First of all, tomorrow May 15th is my marvelous partner’s 29th birthday. Hoo-ray! Happy Birthday, lovely cohabitational life partner! Mmmmwa! We’ll be going out for beers with a mess of his friends who also have a birthday near by that date. But that’s in the evening. What to do with the day. Oh yes, the Art Star Craft Bazaar. You may have heard of it. Taking place this Saturday, May 15th as well as Sunday, May 16th from 11 A.M. – 6 P.M. at the Penn’s Landing Great Plaza, the bazaar will feature over 100 craftspersons and artists as well as live music.

In case you’ve missed it, the Art Star Craft Bazaar is an outdoor retail craft show juried by Art Star Gallery & Boutique, so they’re going to showcase the twee crafty things that they love. The bazaar is going down rain or shine, and it is always free to attend. There will also be free silkscreened tote bags designed by Julie West for the first 250 shoppers each day who show up at the Art Star tent.

May Listings

Friday, May 7th, 2010

Hey ya’ll. Spring is here and the weather is perfect for a marathon of art. Go see some shows, stop, have a drink, walk to the next one, when it feels too claustrophobic move on. May and September are top months for shows because the weather generally puts people in the mood to go out to galleries. So follow the seasons, dear reader, and get your art on this First Friday. As always, there are the well documented free wine affairs in the standard galleries. But this site is about art outside of the gallery scene. Let’s see what’s on my radar this month.* (more…)

Cinco De Mayo

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

Hey everyone. I’m working for the man / doing my civic and or patriotic duty this week / being a schmuck. I thought it wasn’t going to interfere with my precious blogging of all things bars and art, but then lo and behold, my competence was observed and rewarded with more work. I was asked to instruct a version of the class I participated in last week. Without going into details, it’s been dramatic and time consuming. I hope to have the listings ready to go for first Friday, but planned content for this week wasn’t developed – the days I usually devote to creating copy and researching were usurped. (Sorry, Niki Bombshell and The Last Minute Art Show – I was trying to create something about you guys, and as you know it didn’t happen.) Excuses, excuses. SO: very quickly, in case this is the only chance I get this week: (more…)

The Mint Julep

Saturday, May 1st, 2010

It is a life goal of mine to attend the Kentucky Derby. Mostly because I love outrageous hats. And gambling on horse races. But the third reason I would like to attend is of course the cult of the particular tipple the Mint Julep, which now a days is neglected all year long save for today. I know someone who’s been to the derby before and the stories she tells are a-maz-ing. (Well, all the stories she tells are amazing, but the derby ones are particularly a hoot and a half.) Alas, it is a dream deferred for now. Chances are, you may have just found out that it’s derby day, and are wondering how you can get into the spirit. I suggest smashing up some mint and getting smashed at home, as it’s a lovely day for hanging out on stoops, roofs, or back yards. But if you’re feeling social, or not in a self bar tending mood,¬† lots o’ places around town are celebrating by breaking out specials on Mint Juleps. If you are an ambitious drinker, you could plot your course and be thoroughly trashed today. But that wouldn’t be very genteel. (more…)

Cafe Estelle

Mary Galgon
Mary Galgon

Someone was mentioning a nice brunch they had at Cafe Estelle and happened to mention that they had rotating art on the walls. Ah HA! A new listing (I’ve e-mailed them to ask permission.) I hear the food here is, pardon the pun, stellar, although I’ve yet to check it out myself. And they actually update their website with their rotating artist. Currently for the month of May they have Mary Galgon on the walls in a show called “A Simple Life”

Also in listing news, Soy Cafe on 2nd in Northern Liberties is showing Lyndi Mann.

Art in the (Mario Lanza) Park

Friday, May 15th, 2009

I told you spring was going to bring lots of outdoor art events! Just got a blurb from QVNA about their own mini arts festival this Sunday May 17th, from 11AM until 5PM. This is the 11th annual ‘Art in the Park’. Quoth the email “over 20 artists will be selling their paintings, jewelry, photography, pottery, sculpture, textiles and more. This is a great opportunity for you to support your local artists and craftspeople and to pick up a wonderful piece of art for yourself or your home. Come meet the artists, visit with neighbors, take in some fresh air and enjoy the park.”

Word.

I love Mario Lanza Park. It’s completely hidden and a wonderful neighborhood gem. Because it’s in the middle of the blocks between 2nd st & 3rd st and Catherine & Queen Streets you wouldn’t know it was there until you walked up on it. Although QVNA hosts a lot of family events there, there’s no playground so it’s really a nice adult refuge. There’s a dog run, a nice open plaza area, soft grass (currently gated off) , benches, a bunch of wacky squirrels . . .

Weekend Art Events

Friday, May 15th, 2009

Even though the weather isn’t particularly cooperating, Spring is here, bringing with it lots of fun art events. This Saturday May 16th is the Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby. Now, seeing as I work Saturdays, I’ve never been able to go to this event, but my friends have, and the pictures they take are wild. People go all out designing their sculpture and costumes. What is the Kinetic Sculpture Derby? According to the website it’s ” . . . not a race, but rather a design competition and parade celebrating human powered-transit and art in Kensington.” If you go out, you get to vote on the winning categories — including 2nd to last, people’s choice and best of art, breakdown, costumes, and engineering, respectively.

Also this Saturday in conjunction with the KKSD is the Trenton Avenue Arts Festival, a more traditional arts and crafts fair. So go! Have a good time for me! Eat food, buy local art, participate! Both events: Saturday, May 16th, 2009 from 12 noon – 5 pm. 2000-2300 blocks of Trenton Avenue.

Green Line Cafe Shows

Monday, May 4th, 2009

The Green Line Cafe is one of those ur-coffee houses that typify the whole movement. Family owned, with a ‘think globaly act locally’ ethos, a desire to create a sense of place within the community, (as well as providing much needed caffeine for the University City crowd,) they are the place on the west side of the river to spend the day drinking coffee in an artistic atmosphere.¬† And it has three locations, all showing art. Let’s see what’s on the walls, shall we?

Ruth Ansel, Woods.

FREE WINE! May ’09

Friday, May 1st, 2009

It’s Free Wine Friday — or First Friday. And as usual for FF it’s going to be rainy. If you’re in the mood to fight the Olde City crowds for cheez-it crumbs and shot glasses of box wine try the Funnel Pages or Philly Art Galleries to figure out your route. Both sites are well organized and offer their own point of view of what’s out there to see.

Or you could use those same resources to ditch Olde City and find new emerging galleries, such as those up in Frankford. Check out the map I made for locations, check the other links for reviews.

OR you could do what I’m going to do when I get off work (pouring the free wine) – head to The Abbaye to see the work of Joseph Morales or Memphis Taproom who’s showing Margaux Kent.
