May Listings

Friday, May 7th, 2010

Hey ya’ll. Spring is here and the weather is perfect for a marathon of art. Go see some shows, stop, have a drink, walk to the next one, when it feels too claustrophobic move on. May and September are top months for shows because the weather generally puts people in the mood to go out to galleries. So follow the seasons, dear reader, and get your art on this First Friday. As always, there are the well documented free wine affairs in the standard galleries. But this site is about art outside of the gallery scene. Let’s see what’s on my radar this month.* (more…)

December Listings

Margaux Kent

Margaux Kent

December listings are especially sluggish coming in this month. Light on bars, but heavy on group shows in alternative venues. Luckily for the artists showing, many shows are for both December and January, capitalizing on the possibility of gift sales, and simply allowing longer viewing time. Most shows begin First Friday December 4th and conclude at the end of the month unless otherwise indicated. These are just what’s new up on the walls; as always, check the listings page for older and ongoing shows, and to let me know if I’ve missed anything.

For Those to Come

Fresh from my facebook (my personal source for all reliable news,) there will be an opening reception tonight at Benna’s Cafe for the show “For Those That Come” a group show of bird themed art with the proceeds to go to the American Bird Conservatory. Theme shows: a great way to get a bunch of disparate artists showing. I am a genius and tried to search the internet to figure out who all was taking part, when I realized that the names are on the poster. S-M-R-T.

Artists involved include: Nishat Akhtar, Ben Brower, Michael Bukowski, Avalon Clare, Ryann Casey, Charlie Cottone, Anthony Croasdale, Alex Curtis, Adriane Dalton, Jeanne D’Angelo, Matt DiFilippo, Monica Elder, Melissa Farley, Ashley Gehman, Alyssa Grenning, Justin Gray,¬† Eleanor Grosch, Joseph Hasenauer,¬† Katie Henry, Zia Hiltey,¬† Jessica Hoffman, Andrew Johnson-Lally, Kettner, Doug Larocca, Erik Mato, James McCullough, Jen Mercer, Kat Moran, Kaitlin Mosley, Alicia Neal, Justin Quinlan, Joe Reynolds,¬† Josh Robeson, Natalia Smith, Yank Spade, Erin Turner, Laura Walczak, Ketch Wehr, Justine Wilson,¬† Clint Woodside, Greg Zadrozny, and Avalon Zimmerman.

Weekend Art – The South Philadelphia Boat Show

An Art Show not a Boat Show

An Art Show not a Boat Show

This one almost snuck past me it’s flying so low on the radar. There’s a group art show happening in an unusual spot this weekend. The South Philadelphia Boat Show is not to be confused with, you know, an actual boat show. This is a cheekily named, nautical themed, salon-style exhibition of local artists. Get down to 1414 S. Darien St. (small street between 8th and 9th on Reed) either Saturday or Sunday between 1 and 7 PM to see a whole bunch of fabulous local art. Let me see if I can suss this location out a bit better, so as not to mislead anyone. [Ed note - aha! New space called Storage. A live / work / show space. Thanks, Little Berlin blog & Darla!] Meanwhile:

Artists participating include: Sara Atlas, Nick Balko, Gabriel Boyce, Chang Chang, Danielle Conkling, Alex Curtis, Jamieson Daley, Adriane Dalton, Nathan Dixon, A Dufala, Wyatt Dunn, Michael Eddinger, Joy Feasley, Alex Gartelmann, Richard Harrod, Beth Heinly, Katie Henry, William Hildalgo, Charles Hobbs, Joseph Hu, Darla Jackson, Jake Kehs, Gabrielle Lavin, Preston Link, Tristin Lowe, Jacob Lunderby, Barry Lutz, Amy Mash, Jeremiah Misfeldt, Kaitlin Mosley, Brian Murray, Kristen Neville, Joslyn Newman, Philthy Paul, Scott Pellnat, Leslie Rogers, Raul Romero, Hiro Sakaguchi, Paul Swenbeck, Katie Tackman, Rick Tygger, Candace Vivian, Jeremy Waltman, Casey Watson and others.

Quite a few familiar names in there. Alex Gartelmann is founder of My House Gallery, a member of Little Berlin collective, and a definite mover and shaker in Philly Art. Darla Jackson is one of my favorite working artists in the city; she just showed at Mew. Tristin Lowe is the toast of town right now for his work at the Fabric Workshop and museum.¬† Kaitlin Mosley just showed at Last Drop, Adriane Dalton showed at Benna’s Cafe, in fact many of these names have popped up on the artblog at least once. Should be a really great show. Unfortunately, I work always Saturdays so I’ll miss the big byo party opening. Hopefully I can stop by Sunday, for the big byo party closing. No one throws a party like artists.

June Coffee Buzz

Monday, June 15th, 2009

As I’m just getting this thing rolling, and many locations don’t have e-mail or updating websites, it frequently will take me a couple weeks to get all the listings for the month in order. But it works out well for you, as rather than being overwhelmed by the whole shebang at the beginning of the month you get leisurely rolling updates of what’s on the walls. It’s not like you were going to hit up every place First Friday or Second Thursday either. You know one of the things I like about you? Your patience. It’s a virtue these days.

Working gallery hours, I almost never get to go to galleries, as they tend to be open, you know, gallery hours. But I’m generally free Mondays, so that’s when I stroll around with my little note book and digital camera, filling in the blanks from the lack of direct e-mail marketing. And the coffee houses are always open for me, with their sweet, sweet caffeine and art. I hit up a couple cafes I had never been to before this week, so not only is this a listings update, it’s also a mini review. (more…)
