Free Wine Night

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Science!

It’s free wine night, aka First Friday. Everything seems so muddled these days, with everyone chasing the coattails of the big art event of the month, or suffering the malaise of winter. Mix it up a bit and hit Frankford Ave tonight. Why Frankford instead of Olde City? Well, there’s a ton of receptions up there tonight, including one with a freakin’ Tesla coil¬†demonstration. How effing rad is that? For serious. Not only is there a demonstration to coincide with the Tesla-inspired art at Germ Bookstore, there are bars like Atlantis showing art, boutiques like Piranha Betty‚Äôs Art Market with music, art, and astrology,¬†the launch of a new storefront/collective/not really sure but it’s a party (VWVOFFKA) and even real legit galleries up there that you can be sure will be the focus of the arts discussions as everyone moves out of overpriced downtown (yes, I know no one calls any part of Philadelphia downtown, but it is down hill from the Frankford Arts ave, so . . .) Anyway. So many diverse arty things happening in that neighborhood. Check out Frankford Ave Arts listings page to see everything happening tonight, and support your local upstart arty¬†businesses!

Olivia Vaughn at Atlantis: The Lost Bar 2442 Frankford Ave.
Art Inspired by Nikola Tesla at Germ Bookstore 2005 Frankford Ave.
David Aronson at Piranha Betty’s Art Market 2472 Frankford Ave.
Storefront Opening Party at VWVOFFKA 2037 Frankford Ave.

Free Wine! July ’09

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

It’s that time once again, where walls are turned over and new shows go up. Now, I’m not goinig to lie to you; there isn’t that much going on, and chances are you have better things to do tonight than scrounge for free wine. It’s slim pickins in the ol’ gallery circuit. But if you really want to go to a gallery, I’d say make it a good one: tonight, check out Bambi Gallery‘s new space at the Piazza at Schmidts and the solo show of Sarah Gamble Unemployment Paintings, til July 26. Three reasons why this is my free wine pick: One: it’s a great gallery anyway and it’s interesting to see how they transitioned to a new space. Two: Sarah Gamble just won a Pew. You can say you got to see her way back when. Three: I hear the Swift Half has great food and beer for after. Meanwhile, there will be a Michael Jackson tribute tonight starting at 5 on the jumbotron. Art, drinks, and dancing? Ah, the Piataz, making sure you never have to leave it’s sweet comforting embrace.

Bambi Gallery is located at 1001 N. 2nd St., Suite 7. The opening reception is tonight July 3, from 6-10 pm.

Free Wine! June ’09

Friday, June 5th, 2009

Well, it’s raining so it must be First Friday. But even for First Friday it’s an especially nasty rain. I suggest if you’re doing the free wine thing pick one location with multiple galleries, such as the building at which houses¬† Copy Gallery as well as Tiger Strikes Asteroid (319 N. 11th St. 3rd & 4th Floor 19107) or the Crane Arts Building (1400 N American St 19122) which has Inliquid, Nexus, Indigo Arts and University of Delaware Gallery as well as artists studios. Of course, you never know, the Olde City jawns might be less crowded with the rain? If it clears up, I would suggest hauling up to Little Berlin (119 West Montgomery, 19122), since it’s a rad space and a rad show concept and they’re practically NEVER open (ie just Saturdays) although I’m actually not positive on their free wine position.

I am tres stressed about our opening / show tonight. Crossing fingers for a jaunt to the Abbaye afterward (showing cartoons by Flip Hassel). BLAH. Tomorrow: a new article by Mike Smith our FIRST OF MANY tee-shirt review, what’s happening in NoLibs coffeehouse land, as well as two new alternative exhibition spaces I’ve discovered and contacted to be listed.

FREE WINE! May ’09

Friday, May 1st, 2009

It’s Free Wine Friday — or First Friday. And as usual for FF it’s going to be rainy. If you’re in the mood to fight the Olde City crowds for cheez-it crumbs and shot glasses of box wine try the Funnel Pages or Philly Art Galleries to figure out your route. Both sites are well organized and offer their own point of view of what’s out there to see.

Or you could use those same resources to ditch Olde City and find new emerging galleries, such as those up in Frankford. Check out the map I made for locations, check the other links for reviews.

OR you could do what I’m going to do when I get off work (pouring the free wine) – head to The Abbaye to see the work of Joseph Morales or Memphis Taproom who’s showing Margaux Kent.
