Memphis Taproom Handmade Market

It’s lamely exciting to me when I can go into the image archive for an annual event, because it means the blog’s been tracking this sort of thing for over a year now. Began last summer, the Handmade Market at Memphis Taproom is still looking for venders for their festival of local and handmade art and crafts. Email leigh@memphistaproom.com if you’re interested in vending your wares. There’s no application fee and a limited number of spaces.

The market will take place Saturday, July 17 from 11 A.M.- 3 P.M. with a rain date of Sunday, July 1.

Artistic success can be yours

Good news, everybody. I try to keep a running draft of artist opportunities, and there are a whole mess of them this week, from all different walks. I’d like to focus on, you know, the whole alternative spaces thing, but an opportunity to expand your resume and get your career pumped is really more important than my petty little mission statement. So I’ll be trying to keep my eye out for gallery and museum shows, national calls to artists, and generally try not to be so myopic. With that in mind, let’s see what’s going on our there for you arty-types, in order of impending deadline. (more…)

ASCB '10

Couple of quick opportunities for artists, curators, mixologists, and those of you who self-identify as all of the above:

Art Star is accepting applications for their 7th annual Art Star Craft Bazaar. The rules say that up to two artists may share a booth, but collectives are allowed to apply as a group. It would be awesome to see some collectives and more art-orientated artists showing works at the popular event which always gets lots of press and foot traffic. To apply, go here.

Pterodactyl

Have a fabulous idea for a show but no place to exhibit it? Pterodactyl has an open call to curators right now. Information on their website. You need to have a solid concept, an idea of what artists might go in the show, as well as images of artists work. They also accept ongoing artists submissions.

In booze news, Art in the Age is looking for ROOT recipes yet again. Got a nummy one? Make a quick video of yourself and post it to their blog. Press release here. As always with ROOT, you could win more ROOT.

My House Gallery is accepting proposals for their new installation room, Compact Project Space. Update – Art In Bars looking for artists

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

new business card

new business card

Art in Bars is pleased to announce that we are beginning our second phase – moving towards being an active member in the placement of artists in alternative spaces – and becoming a sole proprietorship. I would also like to announce the addition of Del Lovett as the Director of Artists. Del will most likely not participate in the blog, but rather focus on the behind the scenes artist recruitment. Del is herself a painter, with a BFA from Moore College of Art and Design. Her partnership will assure the high quality of artists represented, expand and diversify the businesses we work with, and ensure the smooth work review and installation processes. If you are interested in working with Art in Bars, please contact us at admin@artinbars.com.

The Pitch to Artists – What Art in Bars can do for you: Art in Bars is dedicated to promoting emerging artists by connecting their work with alternative exhibition spaces. We target your artwork to businesses and clients that share an aesthetic affinity with your work. We handle all presentation, timeline planning, and public relations, allowing you to focus on your art work while your career matures and you establish a sales and showing history. Art in Bars does more than provide you with a venue to exhibit in; we handle all event and artist promotion. Utilizing our years of experience in art promotion, your shows are highlighted in the appropriate publications, online venues, and listings, heightening your visibility in the arts scene. The onus is on us to provide timely, concise accurate press releases with juicy pull lines, appropriate quality images, and to maintain visibility in the crowded marketplace, allowing you to focus on your art and reap the benefits. There is no long term commitment required – we are interested in helping establish your career and fully expect you to move on to bigger and better things. Check the Featured Artists page for some FAQ and then e-mail me at admin@artinbars.com with your questions so I can expand the section to fit your needs.

Calls to Artists

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Now, I hear you muttering to yourself as you skim through this blog. “Great,” you mutter, “but how do I get a solo show in a bar?” An excellent question for any emerging artist with a slim showing history, or art student who wants to hit the ground running. There’s a lot you can do if you want to really start pushing a showing career, but that’s for another unsolicited advice day. Today, I just want to let you know about several current open calls.

Why open calls? Well, if your exhibition history on your resume is slim to nill, it will be hard to get a solo show off the bat no matter how wonderful you and your work are. Group shows are excellent for many reasons: one, plumps your resume; two gets you and your work out there, where it can be seen by eyeballs and you can meet and greet the people who make up the artsphere, leading to things to come; three, they are far less work and stress than a solo, but gives you a taste of what will be expected of you in shows to come.

There are many, many open calls at any given time. Some have a fee (and often a cash prize) some are free to enter, some are slightly shady, such as “online only exhibitions” some are very nice plumes for your cap, such as museum shows. If you’re thinking big, as in, national shows where you may need to ship your work to California, or are interested in finding out about grants, you really should be getting The Art Deadline List. There is a premium listing or a free option; both are overwhelming with the amount of open calls.

But I’m thinking local, so here are some Philadelphia open calls, fitting of the Art in Bars theme I would like to highlight today:

The Midwives Collective and Off The Wall Gallery are co-producing a show entitled “The Whole Nine Yards” focusing on unusual textile or fabric media. The entry fee is $5 per work, with the jury awarding up to $500 in prizes. The jury is also responsible for deciding at which gallery selected work will be exhibited. Deadline is November 12, 2009. Full prospectus available on the midwives’s website.

Germ Bookstore is currently accepting submissions for the upcoming February / March 2010 Nikola Tesla themed show. There is no fee to enter, and Germ is also accepting general submissions for artists exhibitions, as long as the work deals with “the occult, conspiracy, post-apocalyptic, heresy, extraterrestrials, or fringe interests.” More information on their site. To submit work, email art@germbooks.com with jpgs and descriptions of work.

Speaking of general open submission policies, Green Line Cafe has a page full of information for you if you would like to show at any of their West Philadelphia locations as does Cafe Estelle. Also, Mew is always looking for window artists. Now you know some of the open calls, all you have to do is perfect your submissions. But that’s another post.

Walking Fish, Breading Cutlets, Getting Drunk

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

Congrats to Fractured Fairy Tales Рthe Walking Fish Fringe production featuring the one and only Mike Smith Рfor getting the Daily Candy kiss today. If perhaps you only know Mike from say, Lunch Money, or hosting Cash Dance, or being at a party you went to, you should check out his participation in this family friendly affair. The last performances are this  Saturday the 19th, at noon and again at 2PM. Walking Fish Theatre, 2509 Frankford Ave. (215-427-9255). Tickets online at www.livearts-fringe.org.

Apparently the Criterion Collection is releasing a movie that honestly I’ve never heard of in my short life, – Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles – although all the reviews of it reference all the other food movies I’ve seen. The gist of the film seems to be that it features long still shots in real time of the main character cooking ordinary food. Point ‘o the matter: to promote said release Criterion is looking for people to create video reenactments of cooking one of three ordinary dishes: cutlets, meatloaf, or potatoes.¬† Although there have already been submissions, apparently they’re all pretty literal and Criteron was hoping to get some more, shall we say, artistic, avant garde interpretations. Like, artists might make. You still have time to film your own and upload it to YouTube; the deadline is September 28, 2009. There will be two winners: one Audience Award, winner, voted on by the YouTube trolls, will receive a $100 gift certificate to the Criterion Collection website. Then a Grand Prize winner selected by the staff of the Criterion Collection will receive a new PlayStation 3. Pretty awesome for setting up a camera to watch you massage some ground beef. This came from Gourmet, or rather Ruth Reichl’s Twitter, which I follow, because I am a nerd. (more…)

Call to Artists – Acting 201

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Sarah Hunt's image from Acting 101 "

Sarah Hunt's image from Acting 101 "Don't you remember? We had plans."

Sarah Hunt from The Midwives Collective posted this on her facebook stream the other day and it sounds like so much fun that even though I do not consider myself an artist, I’m thinking about participating. With my rich theater tradition and obsession with my digital camera, I think I can make these dreams come true. And if I’m thinking about taking part in it, you should too.

“You are invited to participate in, ACTING 201, a photography project curated by members of The Midwives Collective & Gallery, Christiana Kugel, Sarah Hunt, and Elizabeth Smith. A continuation of ACTING 101, presented by The Gallery in 2006, the concept of this project is also inspired by the art of acting improvisation. We anticipate the participation of painters, drawers, printmakers, photographers, filmmakers, and actors, alike. Read more about the project below and reply to Sarah Hunt at themwc@gmail.com by August 15th, 2009 to commit to the project and receive further instruction.

“Instructions: A prompt, or one line script, will be chosen for you at random and sent through the mail. Once it arrives, consider deeply the prompt you were given. Remember that you are at once the photographer, the actor, and the director. You are encouraged to develop your character, get into costume, create the scene. You may even enlist other actors, as long as you remain the subject. Live truthfully under the imaginary circumstances. Think: ‚Äúconscious spontaneity‚Äù (or say it aloud, we don‚Äôt care). Then capture the emotional and physical truth of that one moment, all in one 8‚Äùx10‚Äù color photograph.

“Submission Deadline: Thursday, October 1st, 2009.

“Exhibition Details: The show will be up for one night only, Friday, October 9th, 2009 from 6-10PM at the Midwives Collective & Gallery, 1241 Carpenter St., 2nd Fl., Ste. 2, Philadelphia, PA 19147.

“CONTACT: If you have any questions or know of other artists who would be interested in participating, email: themwc@gmail.com. Visit our website, midwivescollective.com for more information about The Midwives Collective & Gallery and examples of photographs from ACTING 101.”

Fun, right? You can become a fan of Midwives on facebook (ugh sorry about linking that – hope it works) to check out some of the images from Acting 101 and then E-mail Sarah to let her know you’re on board.
