Let it Snow

Let it Snow

I discovered the last time that it snowed that lots of bars and restaurants panic over the loss of business (especially since it seems as though the extreme weather has fallen on the weekends.) To try to lure people out they send out “hey, we’re still open” e-mails with specials. Now, I’m not subscribed to every restaurant mailing list in Philadelphia by far, but here are a few specials I know are happening today. Feel free to leave any others in the comments. Then if you’re hale and hearty, strap on the snow boots and support your local businesses.

Fork Restaurant (306 Market Street) is offering a complimentary “Blizzard” (LaColombe coffee, chocolate mint liqueur, kahlua and fresh whipped cream)! Just mention the e-mail. Valid only with the purchase of a dinner entree.

Tria Rittenhouse Square (123 S.18th Street) and Tria Washington Square West (1137 Spruce Street) – Are both offering Sunday-school style specials today. St. Joseph Syrah ’02 – meaty Rh√¥ne red. $5 Ewephoria – crunchy sheep’s milk Gouda. $5 Dogfish Head World Wide Stout – massive 18% rarity. $5 Starts at noon. Today only.

Brauhaus Schmitz has been open since the early AM for Konferenz Channel which is some . . . soccer thing. They’re offering a German breakfast of Brotchen, cheese, salami, ham, hard-boiled egg, butter and nutella! Specials include $1.50 Koelsch while FC Koeln plays and $4 beer specials for Franziskaner, Warsteiner and Hausbrau.

There is a metric crapton of Super Bowl Specials happening tomorrow, so perhaps people are waiting on this snow thing until it looks like we know what the weather is going to do. Surprised I haven’t heard anything yet from Varga or Foy’s . . .

Water Closet review – Brauhaus Schimtz pt. 1

brauhaus2Is it wrong to review a bathroom within the first few hours of its grand opening? Yes. I mean, of course it’s clean. Soap and paper towels are there. No mystery puddles anywhere. But I am justifying my decision to review by having this be a bit of a series with this bathroom. Sort of a compare and contrast maybe check it out again a month from now and maybe six months in. I’m taking this opportunity for a series because it’s rare to actually visit a bar on the first day of it being open. Fortunately Bauhaus Smidtz is a cool enough place and I would like to go back.

brauhaus1The bathroom itself is a little….strange. Unisex, upstairs this bathroom looks like a bathroom in your house. Simple; with yellowish paint with white trim and brown floor tiling. Of course it’s clean and bright. The weird thing is the window. The window is very large and goes all the way down to almost the floor. And when you look outside, you are practically looking not only at street level but directly down onto some people’s houses that are behind the bar. So, don’t be surprised if you are walking up what I think is Rodman Street behind Bauhaus Schmitz and see some frat boy lurching, or some grandma on the toilet. So, don’t ever walk up the 700 block of Rodman Street ever again!

We will see what it’s like in a month; good luck Bauhaus Schmitz!

The Entrance to Brauhaus Schmitz

I went to the opening day service Monday at Brauhaus Schmitz knowing full well that it was going to be less than smooth. One week before the opening the pews were on the sidewalk outside and they were knocking out rotting timbers in the entrance. But a week later there was a new entryway, the walls smelled of fresh paint, and business was booming, if chaotic. That’s just how it is when new places are getting the kinks out, so I’m not passing any judgment just yet on the service or any hiccups. It was the first dinner seating they were open to the public. So let’s start with first impressions.

Reinheitsgebot ?

Making use of the unusual layout (there is a low narrow balcony level and high ceilings on the main floor) the design features lots of framed vintage beer posters as well as a giant bakc lit sign proclaiming the Reinheitsgebot in German. (At least, that’s what I’m presuming it was. I wonder if they’ll make the employees memorize it?) The pews are cute, as well as fitting large parties into single tables. But we were seated upstairs. Having visited the location when it was Adobe, I was surprised how well they were able to transition it to a restaurant. I thought the upper level would feel claustrophobic. Our server seated us, and I have to say, her dirndl was way cuter and better fitting than my own.

Opening – Brauhaus Schmitz

Me, in a dirndl, in public, drinking.

Me, in a dirndl, in public, drinking.

Now, I believe I have made it quite clear that I love beer. But, did you know that I also love dirndls? Dirndl being the traditional dress of the Bavarian people. Or, as my sister called them¬† “oompa oompa dresses.” Being Germanic in descent and from a theater family, I take any and every opportunity to wear mine (really my sister’s – I borrowed it from across the country,) blithely oblivious to any sort of shame.¬†¬† We had a “Falltoberfest” party that was not a costume party; wore it. Witness me at last year’s Craft Beer Festival, getting pictures with my favorite brewers, rockin’ the dirndl.¬† This is why I am SUPER JAZZED about tonight’s opening of Brauhaus Schmitz, the new beer hall on South Street that’s going to have waitresses in dirndls, ya’ll! Beer and awesome outfits! I am so there. It’s not just the sassy costumes though. There will be 20 draught beers and 80 different bottles allegedly representing every major beer producing country in the world. (Side note – I watched Three Sheets – I’m pretty sure every country in the world produces some beer. What constitutes the major ones?) But wait, there’s more! Brauhaus Schmitz also is bringing the German food, both traditional as well as modern interpretation. I hear a rumor you can buy sausages by the yard.

I’ve been stalking this restaurant since Foobooz broke the news of their takeover of the old Adobe Home store earlier this year. Since I walk past the place at least once a week, I’ve been keeping track of the progress in person as well as online. The partner hoped Brauhaus Schmitz would be open for his mid-May birthday, but alas, it was not to be. But we’re totally going tonight. (Actually, right now I’m trying to talk him into doing lunch there; they open at 11:30 today.) I’ll let you know if it lives up to my hype.
