Crafts at Mom’s – Bike Art

Sunday, July 5th, 2009

It makes sense to promote Tattooed Mom‘s craft Sundays, because, well, it’s art you make in a bar. And not just any bar. My love for Mom’s (both the Tattooed and Sugar) is as deep as my love for my real mom. Cheap drinks, great staff, a comfortable atmosphere. At Mom’s if you’re broke as hale, they have the cheapest PBR. If you fancy yourself a local-beer only drinker, they have the beers for you. Cider’s always on draft if you want something lighter. And the mixed drinks are some of the cheapest in the city. That’s not even getting into if you have one of the magic wooden tokens. Or the fun toys and candy on every table. There are specials every day of the week (like Taco Tuesday or Pirogi Wednesday) and they’re open early and late. I love Mom’s. Much of my early twenties was spent either on the couches in the mint green room of Tattooed Mom’s or huddled in a bumper car in the brick basement of Sugar Mom’s.

I told you that you liked bikes. Well, mom agrees with me. Today (July 5th) you can make a spoke card for your bike . I think those are the things that the cool bikers who don’t have breaks stick in their wheels to make it sound like they’re going faster. Or they win in races. I’m not really part of that culture. If you’re not into it, you can make some other crafty things, as they tend to have boxes upon boxes of supplies. Crafting takes place from 1 – 11PM and if the lure of glue, feathers, and glitter wasn’t enough, they always offer $1 PBR cans, $1.50 Lionshead bottles, and half priced sandwiches. It’s the affordable way to rebound from a hangover.

Call to Artist – Bike Part Art Show

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

Hey there artists. You like bikes, I know you do. Well, the 7th annual Bike Part Art Show is coming up and they need you art that is “inspired by bike culture or constructed with bike parts.” The deadline for is July 8th. More info can be found at www.neighborhoodbikeworks.org/bikeart or by emailing Kate at artshow@neighborhoodbikeworks.org. If you need to rummage for bike parts, well they can help you with that as well.

In other open call news, Milkboy Coffee Cafe in Ardmore is planning on creating a projection of artwork  and is looking for submissions. They are also do the monthly rotating art on the walls and are looking for new  artists who are interested in unusal display. Contact Jamie Lokof at jamie@milkboyrecording.com to find out more details about both exhibition opportunities.

And according to the rumor on Inliquid, The Khyber is considering getting in on the Olde City Fist Friday scene with rotaing work in their upstairs bar. As this is a rowdy, grungy dance space, the ideal artists they are interested in working with would be performance / street / graffiti artists but are open to other forms. Shows would coincide with  an afterparty opening and ongoing DJs / danceparties / performances. For more information or to submit work, contact Shayne Wagman by e-mailing shayne.wagman@gmail.com.
