May Listings

Friday, May 7th, 2010

Hey ya’ll. Spring is here and the weather is perfect for a marathon of art. Go see some shows, stop, have a drink, walk to the next one, when it feels too claustrophobic move on. May and September are top months for shows because the weather generally puts people in the mood to go out to galleries. So follow the seasons, dear reader, and get your art on this First Friday. As always, there are the well documented free wine affairs in the standard galleries. But this site is about art outside of the gallery scene. Let’s see what’s on my radar this month.* (more…)

January Listings

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

Firstly, it appears as though Mew is closing.¬† This is sad news, as they were a great boutique / gallery business who showed many local emerging artists. They will be open through the 11th of January, and will also be selling furniture and fixtures. Also in closing news, word on the street is Pearl art supply on South Street is closing. They were pretty poorly run for the past few years, so I can’t claim surprise, but I have to say as a resident of the neighborhood I’m worried. This year South Street lost a market (Chef’s Market), dozens of small stores, and at least 6 restaurants. Even though there was movement to fill the empty storefronts with temporary galleries, that sort of fizzled and lost momentum (note to self: what’s going on with that movement).

As previously mentioned, many of the January shows will be the same as December. It’s the holidays and the weather.¬† Due to the funkiness of the New Year falling on a First Friday openings are all over the map. Assume that the show is currently on display, and the reception date is as given. If it’s not listed, you missed the opening party. As always, check the listings page for older and ongoing shows, and to let me know if I‚Äôve missed anything.

Windows in Olde City

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

For Design Philadelphia the Olde City Business Collective has encouraged their shop owners to decorate their windows. With 50 participating locations there is a wide variety of displays to check out. Some are crafted by the employees, but many are the work of artists and designers, including Beth Beverly and Aubrey Costello. Take a stroll around the neighborhood and check it out.

Afterward, be sure to vote on your favorite, because the winning window will be awarded a grand prize of a weekend getaway in Savannah, Georgia and a private a tour of the Savannah College of Art and Design. Rad. This Friday October 9th there will be an opening reception at Dane Decor (315 Arch Street) with snacks and cocktails, where you can mingle with the artists. This is a super short happening, with the voting closing October 13th. Then, on Tuesday the 20th  there will be another party for the awards reception at F.U.E.L. (249 Arch Street) where the winner will be announced.

If you’re not around the area, you can check out the photos online, although there’s no way to tell which artists did what or even what business window it is. If you feel like strolling around, in this lovely weather, I have made a map with all of the participating businesses as well as the names of the artists.

Weekend Art Events – Pt. 1 Art + Soul Food

Friday, June 12th, 2009

Because I’m going out of town, of course there are two AMAZING art events happening this weekend. I am super melancholy to not be able to attend these, but the vacation with the partner and pals was planned in the winter, so there is nothing to be done. I’ll just have to tough it out on the beach. *Insert tiny violin*

artsoulfoodFirst up, June 13th (That would be Saturday) is Art + Soul Food is holding the kick off event for one of the very awesome urban revitalization trends that is happening in neighborhoods throughout Philly. Increasingly empty storefronts on commercial avenues are being lent to artists. You may have heard about this trend on South Street, but it’s also happening in my old stomping grounds of Girard Ave. This is a wonderful for the area, because it kinda has a bad reputation but is actually a really walkable interesting neighborhood corridor. I really hope people a) go to this event, and b) go back because their minds are changed about the possibilities of this area.

Magestic - Mounted rabbit with duck feet and and pigeon wings. Features pearl embellishment on forehead and cat whiskers.

Beth Beverly Magestic - Mounted rabbit with duck feet, pigeon wings, pearl embellishment and cat whiskers.

ANYWAY – lots of really wonderful artists are getting the opportunity to showcase their work in the storefronts AND there’s going to be food and¬† music and other good things. I was so excited to see that Beth Beverly is going to be one of the artist. She crafts the most unique sculpture / art objects / decor / accessories out of taxidermy, fur, feathers, and unusual materials. (menageriedesign) I love her work, although because it’s a bit outre it’s been hard to find the right venue to showcase it. Other artists taking part in this include Pearl Bell, Ira Blanchard, John Blanchette, Greg Brellochs, Gabriel Byrne, James Coughlin, Bob Deane, Maria Eife (beautiful jewelry), Ryan J Greenheck, Josh Harmony, Natalie Hope McDonald, Rabid Fox (also rad jewelry), Sarah Peoples, and Rob Sutherland. Phew!

The good news is even though the opening event is Saturday June 13th, the storefronts will be up for a month, and I beleive I heard something about a party on July 4th as well. So there is hope for me being able to take in this event. More information can be found at artplussoulfood.com/
