By Jenn Sharon

19102 and 19103. Two of the poshest zip codes for Center City, Philadelphia. Rittenhouse, the Business District, and Avenue of the Arts. Real estate prices are high and so are martini prices. But you don’t have to spend your whole paycheck to hang there. So whether you’re trying to impress some out-of-town friends or you just need a break from the neighborhood dive—here are some places to drink that won’t get you in trouble with your bank. (more…)

Ask an Artist Gretchen Diehl

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

Gretchen Diehl expressed interest in participating in the Ask-an-Artist and her info was passed along to me. While researching her to come up with questions (yes, I try to tailor questions to the individual’s art as well as asking about art in general) I realized I have recently seen her works at a show at James Oliver Gallery, and was intrigued when I learned that she also creates whimsical jewelry.

Art in Bars: Your work is very graphic, and although of course more subtle in real life, reproduces very well. Is the web-friendliness of your work a conscious choice? You use words like illustration, and drawing to refer to your art, do you feel that effects the “seriousness” of your work?
Gretchen Diehl: the web-friendliness of my work is a happy accident. i learned how to use the ink jet shrink film to reproduce my images and make them salable. the fact that they are flat and easy to scan is directly connected to the material- so i am lucky in that respect! (more…)

Tuesday - the forgotten going-out day

If you’re like me, and I know I am, you rarely go out Fridays or Saturdays, preferring to spend those nights at home with friends. If you’re even more like me, you find that you go out an awful lot on all those other days of the week. This pattern can be shocking when you break it and go to a favorite bar on a weekend, to find it – horrors – filled with people. Imagine. Having to wait for a table. The noise. Terrible. Think about trying an early night in the week to go out. Like Tuesday for example. There’s a couple of lovely things that happen every Tuesday night. Fun and you can avoid the weekend masses. Lots ‘O Opportunities

Artistic success can be yours

Good news, everybody. I try to keep a running draft of artist opportunities, and there are a whole mess of them this week, from all different walks. I’d like to focus on, you know, the whole alternative spaces thing, but an opportunity to expand your resume and get your career pumped is really more important than my petty little mission statement. So I’ll be trying to keep my eye out for gallery and museum shows, national calls to artists, and generally try not to be so myopic. With that in mind, let’s see what’s going on our there for you arty-types, in order of impending deadline. (more…)

Weekend Arty Openings

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

Harvey Stern

I’m very pleased that the art events seem to be spreading out instead of just clumping up on First Friday. The spread is good: it means that people are more inclined to see more shows, not forget about art happenings (‘missing’ FF), and emerging artist might be able to snag a little attention free from the FF suck. In fact, things are so spread I’ve decided to post this today to include the tonight’s openings as well. If you’re hosting a Thursday opening might as well get the respect for it. Now if there was just a magic money fairy to make the collective events not be one night only. Back to the practical world; lots of events to attend this weekend to support your local artists. Beer, Dogs, and Baseball at Bridget Foy’s

Monday, April 5th, 2010

Baseball season is here!

Today is the home opening day for the Philadelphia Phillies! Game starts at 1:05 PM and is airing on MyPhl 17. I’m rather blase about sports in general, but I adore baseball. The nobility of the sport, the importance of teamwork, the pace and minutia, and of course, how the game’s not over until the very last pitch. Growing up in a city without a major league team, we still rooted for our aaa hometeam, the Beavers, and summer to me is never complete without several trips to the ball park. So I’m jazzed to now live in the city of the WFC Phillies, and the glamour of a real stadium not infested with cats. But, I digress. The point of the story is that tonight Bridget Foy’s is offering specials in celebration of opening day. (more…)

No Foolin’ April Listings

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

This week it’s NCECA, the ceramic conference. So if you hit the galleries, mind your handbags, backpacks, and gesticulating, because if you break it, you buy it. Ceramics make me so nervous. I nearly fainted installing at the gallery this month. But if you’re like me and ceramiced-out there’s plenty of non-clay work in the alternative spaces (the media doesn’t really do well installed in bars and coffee shops.) Currently on the walls: April 2010 ‚Äì Most shows begin First Friday April 2nd, and conclude at the end of the month unless otherwise indicated. In addition to Free Wine Friday openings, many listings this month have events next week. Which makes me happy. I hate it when all the arty happenings are crammed into one day. In addition to art exhibitions there are art auctions, comic book launches, and (more…)
