January Listings

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

Firstly, it appears as though Mew is closing.  This is sad news, as they were a great boutique / gallery business who showed many local emerging artists. They will be open through the 11th of January, and will also be selling furniture and fixtures. Also in closing news, word on the street is Pearl art supply on South Street is closing. They were pretty poorly run for the past few years, so I can’t claim surprise, but I have to say as a resident of the neighborhood I’m worried. This year South Street lost a market (Chef’s Market), dozens of small stores, and at least 6 restaurants. Even though there was movement to fill the empty storefronts with temporary galleries, that sort of fizzled and lost momentum (note to self: what’s going on with that movement).

As previously mentioned, many of the January shows will be the same as December. It’s the holidays and the weather.  Due to the funkiness of the New Year falling on a First Friday openings are all over the map. Assume that the show is currently on display, and the reception date is as given. If it’s not listed, you missed the opening party. As always, check the listings page for older and ongoing shows, and to let me know if I’ve missed anything.

Ah, first Friday in fall. The air is crisp and perfect for strolling, and everyone has their fall ales on tap. Get out! See some art. Makes this a super-arty weekend. Here’s the new shows I’ve heard about:

Green Line Powelton – 3649 Lancaster Ave. – is now showing Andrew Christman.
Lucy’s Hat Shop – 247 Market St. – is getting on board the art in bars train (this is their first appearance on this site) – they’re hosting a group show featuring Alison Gulcynski, Lisa Haskell, Kelly Kozma, Andie Olsen, and Dana Osburn.
Plume – 111 East Girard Ave. – is a hair salon that is celebrating their first anniversary with a show of works by Ed Brady, Ryan Vancho, and Travis Whiteneck. There will be a party October 3rd from 7-10 PM with food, drinks, and festivities.

Nan Kruzik

Nan Kruzik

Random Tea Room -  has Nan Kruzik and will be doing POST.
Salsita Dance Studio – 1624 South St. – started showing Julia Day last month although I neglected to mention it.

I am pleased that there’s so many new venues on this list this go around. As usual, there will probably be an update in about a week with any 2nd Thursday openings or as shows trickle in. Anyone know what’s going on at Memphis and Mugshots?  Also, did 10th Street Laundromat go out of business? Their site as well as Topstich’s are gone.
