August Shows

Friday, August 6th, 2010

Ah August. The dreaded “dead” month, when a chunk of galleries throw their hands in the air, lock the doors, and head to the shore, grasping at relaxation before the hubbub of September. Meanwhile, back in the city, art and artists trudge on. I’m pleasantly surprised to see new venues on the list that I know show work but are terrible about the while social networking / updating their website thing. Also, South Street is quietly doing that artist space in empty storefronts thing again, although I’ve only seen two pop-up spots, one for Dumpster Divers at 732 South St. and . . . another one. More investigation is needed.

If  you have a show up this month, even if we missed the opening, let me know. AiB wants to promote art outside of the gallery scene!  Hit me up at admin@artinbars.com

July Shows

Monday, July 12th, 2010

Well, I missed the boat on this by about 2 weeks. I excused it the first week, rationalizing that most places were skipping First Friday, what with Independence day falling on that weekend. I’ll get them up by the next week, I assured myself, in a typical act of self delusion. Eh, it’s summer, most places slow down or close anyway. But that’s simply not fair to the artists displayed right now – these “dead” months are when the truly just starting out and really outsider artists get to show. If you’re aware of a friend (or yourself) showing at an outside the gallery system space, please let me know so you can get noticed. July showings: (more…)

It was a Dark and Stormy

Thursday, July 1st, 2010

This is all it takes

I decided that this summer was going to be The Summer of Rum. This was based on the fact that nearly everyone I know claims to dislike the spirit. But why? Who doesn’t love a refreshing mojito in the summer? A solid, classic daiquiri was the go to drink of Hemingway, and my partner’s favorite drink at Cuban places. How did rum get such a bum rap? Probably because most folks are introduced to rum via rum and Cokes. Sticky sweet and prone to being over consumed, it’s the first and last rum drink for many and leads to the negative associations. So I decided 2010 would be The Summer of Rum and I would attempt to fall in love with the much maligned liquor. Having no interest in revisiting the bad stopping off point, or in investigating the mojito I know so well, I asked the resident cocktail expert (Jenn) to recommend a rum-based drink. She had an answer immediately: The Dark and Stormy. (more…)

Beer Observations – Fancy Philly?

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

In this friendly, freedom-loving land of ours - Beer belongs . . . enjoy it!

By Jenn Sharon

You can’t throw a bottle in this city without hitting a bar that boasts the best selection of beers these days. Bars that have beer from every freakin’ country on this planet! Bars have turned into gastropubs and gastropubs into craft beer hubs. Now, I’ve had a lot of these beers and most of them are fantastic. My concern and question is– Is this a good thing for Philadelphia? Philadelphia is a union clad, working class town, and after all of the citiy’s hipsters move to New York or get business or construction jobs where will all of the craft beers go? Will the people who are 19 and 20 today carry on this mircobrew revolution as they become the old heads of this town? (more…)

Still Alive

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

This census thing is really eating up my life since I got promoted. But, as a memo reminded me last week, I’m not allowed to blog, tweet, or post facebook updates about anything that might violate title 13 or reveal pii, like what I’ve been doing. So, I’ve just not. Been blogging, or tweeting, or facebooking. In the midst of all of that, I’m also still artist assisting at least once a week, and yesterday I installed a show at the gallery, where I believe I am officially “advising” at rather than “associate director”ing at now. In addition to THAT Art in Bars is attempting to assemble a show, which I will be installing tomorrow. So the posting, it is slow. Still sitting on all those back posts, and clearly am missing things. Like, BEER WEEK which kicks off tomorrow.¬† I’m attempting to have current listings up-to-date by tomorrow as well. Holla at me (admin@artinbars.com) if you want to get listed.

Meanwhile, Why the fuck don’t you know about . . .

Art Star Craft Bazaar is here

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Art Star Craft Bazaar

First of all, tomorrow May 15th is my marvelous partner’s 29th birthday. Hoo-ray! Happy Birthday, lovely cohabitational life partner! Mmmmwa! We’ll be going out for beers with a mess of his friends who also have a birthday near by that date. But that’s in the evening. What to do with the day. Oh yes, the Art Star Craft Bazaar. You may have heard of it. Taking place this Saturday, May 15th as well as Sunday, May 16th from 11 A.M. – 6 P.M. at the Penn’s Landing Great Plaza, the bazaar will feature over 100 craftspersons and artists as well as live music.

In case you’ve missed it, the Art Star Craft Bazaar is an outdoor retail craft show juried by Art Star Gallery & Boutique, so they’re going to showcase the twee crafty things that they love. The bazaar is going down rain or shine, and it is always free to attend. There will also be free silkscreened tote bags designed by Julie West for the first 250 shoppers each day who show up at the Art Star tent.

Handmade Craft Market

Memphis Taproom Handmade Market

It’s lamely exciting to me when I can go into the image archive for an annual event, because it means the blog’s been tracking this sort of thing for over a year now. Began last summer, the Handmade Market at Memphis Taproom is still looking for venders for their festival of local and handmade art and crafts. Email leigh@memphistaproom.com if you’re interested in vending your wares. There’s no application fee and a limited number of spaces.

The market will take place Saturday, July 17 from 11 A.M.- 3 P.M. with a rain date of Sunday, July 1.
