A supremely affordable $10 will buy you a keepsake pint glass as well as free refills from 7-9 P.M. Featured Sly Fox beers include the Abbey Xtra, Dry Stout, and the Seamus Red Ale, which I recently sampled and thoroughly enjoyed. Who am I kidding? I love almost everything that Sly Fox brews. I’m totally biased. In addition to hanging out and drinking, U Keep the Glass Night also offers the chance to win a whole bunch of swag from the featured brewery. Then you can have a sensible late dinner while you keep drinking. Good times.

It’s free wine night, aka First Friday. Everything seems so muddled these days, with everyone chasing the coattails of the big art event of the month, or suffering the malaise of winter. Mix it up a bit and hit Frankford Ave tonight. Why Frankford instead of Olde City? Well, there’s a ton of receptions up there tonight, including one with a freakin’ Tesla coil demonstration. How effing rad is that? For serious. Not only is there a demonstration to coincide with the Tesla-inspired art at Germ Bookstore, there are bars like Atlantis showing art, boutiques like Piranha Betty’s Art Market with music, art, and astrology, the launch of a new storefront/collective/not really sure but it’s a party (VWVOFFKA) and even real legit galleries up there that you can be sure will be the focus of the arts discussions as everyone moves out of overpriced downtown (yes, I know no one calls any part of Philadelphia downtown, but it is down hill from the Frankford Arts ave, so . . .) Anyway. So many diverse arty things happening in that neighborhood. Check out Frankford Ave Arts listings page to see everything happening tonight, and support your local upstart arty businesses!

UPDATE: I was totally confused. This is happening in NYC. So Philadelphia is now participating in the #class at Winkleman Gallery this Sunday March 7th from 5-8 P.M. Suggested by the artblahg, The Artwake will involve a eulogy followed by a panel discussion. The people at Rebekah Templeton are looking for folks who are interested in volunteering to participate and providing topics to discuss. They’ve created a blog where folks are invited to post thoughts and ideas, the theory being that even if one is unable to attend the event they can be part of discussion. Beyond the wake and the blog, the organizers state that they “are pretty open in terms of other ideas” and are looking for individuals or groups who are interested in participate in other ways. So get on your anarchist artist thinking caps, kids.

I recently met Annette Monnier who runs onereviewamonth.com (among many other arty things) and she actually went up to participate at Winkleman Gallery. You should read her review at the above link, but something she found interesting/frustrating was how New York centric the whole conversation about success was – as though artists outside of that system are simply not part of the discussion. What does that mean for artist in this city, or any other for that matter, if the conversation is simply uninterested in outsiders who are not inside the particular system? I perceive many of the issues plaguing contemporary artists to be non-location specific, and yet all the conversations towards solutions reject the universality of the predicaments. Or perhaps it’s just an issue of think globally act locally.

I am especially interested in this whole shebang after the previous community art discussion at Little Berlin, which seemed terribly interested in repeating the same grievances rather than engaging in a productive dialogue about the state of art in this city. If you’re interested, the meeting was recorded and is available on the Little Berlin website. I imagine listening to a whole hour long meeting and not being able to participate might frustrate, but on the plus side, when you start yelling at the computer your very sensible take on the issues no one will tell you to shut up and play nice.

If you need more information about this #class, and what the kerfuffle is about, Rebekah Templeton Gallery provided these websites:

Hooray Beer! If you’re a lady, like I am, you’re invited to tonight’s I.P.A. (In Pursuit of Ale) meeting, held at BAR on Sansom between 13th and Broad starting at 8 P.M. The event is simple, you show up, mingle with other women at the bar, pay as you go, and drink and talk about beer. Every time I’ve gone I’ve shown up solo and met interesting people who either have the same love of beer or want to develop their palate. It’s a good time. Curious and want to know more? You can always hit up fearless leader Suzanne Woods at beerlass@gmail.com.

I love that Ms. Woods’ is all about spreading the love of beer to the fairer sex. Sorry dudes, but you know you’re the target demographic. In my completely biased opinion beer is the best adult beverage to drink, but women avoid it. I know people who like cocktails because they’re more hollar for your dollar, or wine for the perceived health benefits, but beer is affordable, diverse, and is arguably both healthy AND can get you tore up if you are so inclined. As my brewing partner always tells the ladies who we have to cajole into drinking, beer has less calories, and dark beer has less than light. Words of wisdom to guide you tonight. Don’t fear the beer.

I thought there were some non-gendered beer happenings tonight but looks like I had my dates mixed up. Don’t fret though, I.P.A. frequently hosts mixers. And I don’t think they’ll exactly kick you out of BAR if you show up, gents. It’s not about keeping you out, rather inviting the passionate or curious in.

BAR Sansom between 13th and Broad 8 P.M (Although, I have to say, I have no idea what this BAR is and neither does the internet, which makes me nervous. Whatever, you can always go to Time if it turns out there’s nothing there.)

I know I whine about this every month, but for serious guys, no one is updating their websites or sending out their listings. Maybe it’s the weather; I know Mat Tomezsko’s opening was moved twice. Perhaps people are just chucking any schedule and keeping things up. I wouldn’t know, though, because I’m using the internet to get all of my information, and we all know how accurate that is.
