Oktoberfest-ish

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010
Me, in a dirndl, in public, drinking.

Where can I wear my favorite outfit?

If you’re a long time reader of the blog, you know how much I love Oktoberfest and all its trappings. You also know my unending frustration with the lack of quality (in my very specific definition) Oktoberfests in the area. C’mon! Wasn’t this area settled by the Germans? Curse their history of being the most well integrated European ethnic group! I want dirndls and food and old people dancing! Due to frustration carried over from last year, as well as technical issues, there was no Oktoberfest round up in early September, as there sorta was no point to it. We missed covering Brauhaus Schmidtz‘s week-long celebration. BUT that doesn’t mean that there aren’t Oktoberfest-ish events coming up. Mostly beer oriented, it’s better than nothing! So get your date books out and add these events: (more…)

Screens 'N' Spokes 2010

Screens ‘N’ Spokes 2010 has arrived at Mugshots Fairmount. The theme this year is Do You Ride Together? Or Ride Alone? In case you’ve missed it in years past, Screens ‘N’ Spokes is an art show / event to celebrate art, bikes, and the community spirit they inspire, as well as raising money for the Bike MS: City to Shore Ride. Mugshots will display a selection of limited-run screenprints from 20 renowned rock poster artists. All artwork has been graciously donated by the artists exclusively for this benefit show.

Each design is available as a framed or unframed print. They are on sale in person opening night, tomorrow September 11, and then online starting September 13 through screensnspokes.etsy.com. All proceeds will benefit the Greater Delaware Valley Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. This way you can contribute to a very worthwhile charity while also bringing home a work of art.

Reception will take place Saturday, tomorrow September 11th at 6:30 PM. Mugshots Cafe, 2100 Fairmount Ave.

Schmooze & Booze

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

Something arty to do tonight – and clearly, booze is also involved. Hosted by PositiveSpace, Schmooze and Booze is a networking event intending to unite artists, craftspersons, collectives, collectors, and enthusiasts from the Philadelphia art community. I think it’s a fabulous idea, as it’s very easy to get stuck in the small arty circles of regions of the city, or based upon the people you went to school with. It’s completely free, although there is a small suggested donation for beverages, but totally worth it. You get to booze it up and schmooze about art. It’s taking place tonight, September 1st, from 6-8PM at Philadelphia Center for the Book (626 South Street) which is one of the new Arts on South pop-up spaces I’ve been seeing as I walk around.

Interested? RSVP on the facebook event page.

Dining Out for Life

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Today, Thursday, April 29, 2010 over 200 restaurants across the Delaware Valley are be participating in this year’s Dining Out For Life event. I’m sure you’ve already seen the posters that have been up in many restaurants for weeks now. You may be familiar with the premise. Perhaps you’ve even been in years past, but it’s always a good excuse to enjoy a nice meal out, so think about taking part in it today. All participating restaurants will contribute 33% of their food sales to HIV and AIDS services at local health organizations.

Unlike other restaurant events, you’re probably not going to be upsold a prefix meal of sub-standard quality. The third of the check being donated isn’t contingent on any particular meal or price, so you’re not hemmed in. They also provide the ability to donate above and beyond the check, if you’re so inclined, but there’s not much pressure to. After all, you’ve already committed to contribute by going out for a meal.

Loads of locations are doing lunch as well as dinner, so if you’re not in the mood for the whole shebang (not to mention probable crowds) of the dinner rush, you can still give. And of course, get a meal out of your altruism. A full list of participating restaurants can be found here. High end spots, low-key byos, ethnic cuisines, and gastropubs are all taking part, so there’s no excuse. Dine out tonight.

No Foolin’ April Listings

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

This week it’s NCECA, the ceramic conference. So if you hit the galleries, mind your handbags, backpacks, and gesticulating, because if you break it, you buy it. Ceramics make me so nervous. I nearly fainted installing at the gallery this month. But if you’re like me and ceramiced-out there’s plenty of non-clay work in the alternative spaces (the media doesn’t really do well installed in bars and coffee shops.) Currently on the walls: April 2010 ‚Äì Most shows begin First Friday April 2nd, and conclude at the end of the month unless otherwise indicated. In addition to Free Wine Friday openings, many listings this month have events next week. Which makes me happy. I hate it when all the arty happenings are crammed into one day. In addition to art exhibitions there are art auctions, comic book launches, and (more…)

Sly Fox Keep the Glass

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Tonight it the Sly Fox U Buy The Glass Night at the Abbaye. A supremely affordable $10 will buy you a keepsake pint glass as well as free refills from 7-9 P.M. Featured Sly Fox beers include the Abbey Xtra, Dry Stout, and the Seamus Red Ale, which I recently sampled and thoroughly enjoyed. Who am I kidding? I love almost everything that Sly Fox brews. I’m totally biased. In addition to hanging out and drinking, U Keep the Glass Night also offers the chance to win a whole bunch of swag from the featured brewery. Then you can have a sensible late dinner while you keep drinking. Good times.

Weekend Arty Things – hashtagclass

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

Found image. Which I agree with.

UPDATE: I was totally confused. This is happening in NYC. So Philadelphia is now participating in the #class at Winkleman Gallery¬†this Sunday March 7th from 5-8 P.M. Suggested by the artblahg, The Artwake will involve a eulogy followed by a panel discussion. The people at Rebekah Templeton are looking for folks who are interested in volunteering to participate and providing topics to discuss. They’ve created a blog where folks are invited to post thoughts and ideas, the theory being that even if one is unable to attend the event they can be part of discussion. Beyond the wake and the blog, the organizers state that they “are pretty open in terms of other ideas” and are looking for individuals or groups who are interested in participate in other ways. So get on your anarchist artist thinking caps, kids. (more…)

March Listings

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

I know I whine about this every month, but for serious guys, no one is updating their websites or sending out their listings. Maybe it’s the weather; I know Mat Tomezsko’s opening was moved twice. Perhaps people are just chucking any schedule and keeping things up. I wouldn’t know, though, because I’m using the internet to get all of my information, and we all know how accurate that is. Most shows begin First Friday March 5th and conclude at the end of the month unless otherwise indicated. These are just spaces having events – for full listings, see the listings page. Please let me know if I’ve missed anything. (more…)
